Sciatica Treatment in North Miami Beach
Sciatica can turn sitting, driving, or a simple walk into a struggle. At Everything Physical Therapy in North Miami Beach, Dr. Eric Rosenfield, PT, DPT, and our team treat sciatica one-on-one, finding what’s irritating the nerve and building a plan to calm it down and keep it from coming back. No referral is needed to start, and most insurance plans, including Medicare, are accepted.
What Is Sciatica?
Sciatica isn’t a diagnosis on its own. It describes pain that travels along the sciatic nerve, which runs from the lower back through the buttock and down the back of each leg. It usually happens when something in the lower back, most often a bulging or herniated disc, irritates or compresses one of the nerve roots that form the sciatic nerve. Spinal stenosis, degenerative disc changes and tight muscles in the hip, such as the piriformis, can cause similar symptoms.
Common Symptoms
- Pain that starts in the lower back or buttock and travels down one leg
- Burning, sharp or electric-shock sensations in the leg
- Numbness or tingling in the leg, foot or toes
- Leg weakness, or a foot that feels heavy
- Pain that worsens with sitting, bending, coughing or sneezing
When to seek urgent care: loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or rapidly worsening leg weakness need immediate medical attention. Call 911 or go to the emergency room.
How We Treat Sciatica
Every plan starts with a full evaluation of your spine, hips, posture and nerve function, so treatment targets the actual source of your pain, not just the symptoms. Depending on what we find, your plan may include:
- Hands-on manual therapy to improve joint and soft-tissue mobility in the lower back and hips
- Directional and nerve-gliding exercises that help reduce nerve irritation and “centralize” leg pain back toward the spine
- Core and hip strengthening to support the spine and lower the risk of flare-ups
- Dry needling for tight, painful muscles that can add to nerve symptoms
- Posture, sitting and lifting guidance for work, driving and daily life
- A personalized home program so progress continues between visits
The goal is to relieve pain without relying on medication, injections or surgery, and to give you the tools to manage your back for the long term.
What to Expect
Many patients notice changes within the first few weeks of consistent care, and leg symptoms often ease before back pain fully settles. Your timeline depends on the cause, how long you’ve had symptoms and your goals. We reassess as we go and adjust your plan. If your symptoms point to something that needs a physician’s evaluation or imaging, we’ll tell you and coordinate with your doctor.

Sciatica FAQs
Do I need a referral to see a physical therapist for sciatica?
No. You can book directly with Everything Physical Therapy without a physician referral. We’ll check your insurance before your first visit.
Is physical therapy good for sciatica?
Physical therapy is a common first-line, non-surgical approach for sciatica. A tailored program of movement, manual therapy and strengthening helps many people reduce pain and return to normal activity.
Should I rest until the pain goes away?
Short periods of rest can help during a bad flare, but prolonged bed rest usually isn’t recommended. The right kind of gentle movement often speeds recovery, and we’ll show you which movements help and which to avoid for now.
Does insurance cover physical therapy for sciatica?
Most plans cover physical therapy for sciatica. We accept Medicare and many major plans. See our insurance page or call us to confirm your coverage.
